From time to time, the Computer Officers look for IP addresses that have not made any connections through the department firewall in the previous 12 months. If they still exist, almost all of these machines will need to have an update to their operating system and/or virus scanner.

Where the IT team can identify a research group for these machines they will ask the computer reps to confirm whether the machine still requires a network connection. If it does, the computer rep will be asked to provide some information about the machines. (eg Current operating system, MAC address). IP addresses which have not been active for 12 months and are not required shall be made available for re-use.
