Chemistry Department Network usage

Basic dos and don'ts of being on the Chemistry Department network

  1. All Departmentally-owned computers must have a "registered user" in the Department database. When the registered user leaves, responsibility for the computer must be transferred to a new registered user. (N.B. Transferral of the "registered user" of a computer forms part of the standard Department leaving process; the Computer Officers will not sign off a leaving form unless all systems registered to a user are transferred to another user or removed from the network.) If a computer does not have a registered user, network access will be revoked.
  2. Wherever possible, access to network-connected Department computers should require an individual to authenticate using personal credentials. For computers that are bound to the Department’s Active Directory, this will usually mean authentication via a personal Admitto account. However, for computers connected to the Department’s "instrument VLAN", authentication may instead be achieved via the Raven-controlled instrument VLAN web logon system provided by the Computer Officers.
  3. The Computer Officers need to be able to determine the person using a given computer at any specified time, for example when investigating security issues or possible non-compliance with the Cambridge University Data Network (CUDN) Acceptable Usage Policy. If it is possible to use a Department computer without first authenticating with personal credentials, the registered user must either
    1. Upon request, demonstrate to the Computer Officers who was using the computer at a specified time. This might be achieved by maintaining a logbook of usage, or by requiring users to book their usage of the computer via a booking system, or some other method.
    2. Or, if the registered user cannot achieve this, they must accept responsibility in the event of misuse of the computer concerned

Users of the Department network are reminded that their network usage is also subject to the CUDN Acceptable Usage Policy. In particular:

  • Users and staff responsible for equipment connected to the CUDN will keep the operating system and associated software up to date and will allow automatic updating where practical and appropriate.
  • Users and staff responsible for equipment connected to the CUDN will install and keep anti-malware and anti-virus software up to date and will allow automatic updating where practical and appropriate.

If the Computer Officers determine that a computer connected to the Department network is not compliant with the CUDN Acceptable Usage Policy, its network access will be revoked.
