We install a piece of software (called BBwin) on managed Windows workstations which reports many aspects of a computers health and status to our monitoring system. The reported information includes the list of installed software.
We also provide a standalone tool which also reports to our monitoring system and which can be run by users of unmanaged Windows computers to assist them in auditing installed software to ensure compliance with the Department's software policy. You can download the tool by following the link at the bottom of this page. You can also follow the link at the end of the page to review the source code of the tool, if desired. The tool will report:
- a list of installed software, including version number and date of installation where available
- operating system version and build number (e.g. "Microsoft Windows 10 Pro, Version 10.0.18363")
- a list of pending Windows updates, if any
After downloading the tool, double-click the downloaded audit.exe to run it. It should normally take a few seconds to run, after which it will report the name of the computer that it has reported for (which will be of the form computer_name.ch.cam.ac.uk or computer_name.ch.private.cam.ac.uk). To see the results of the report,
- Go to http://hobbit.ch.cam.ac.uk .
- From the Administration menu item at the top of the page, select Find Host.
- Search for the name of the computer as reported after running the tool (e.g. computer_name.ch.cam.ac.uk or computer_name.ch.private.cam.ac.uk)
- Locate the row in the page for your computer (N.B. this will simply be computer_name without the ch.cam.ac.uk or ch.private.cam.ac.uk part)
- Click the green smiley face or diamond in the columns headed software, osver, and updates (which correspond respectively to the list of installed software, operating system version, and pending Windows updates)
