Managed Linux Workstations

The managed Linux service provides standardised Linux software images, which the Computer Officers can install onto suitable desktop hardware owned by research groups. A set of commonly used applications is provided and others can be added to the latest version of the image on request. The latest version of the image is based on Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa). The previous version of the image was based on Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic Beaver) but this went end-of-life in April 2023 and so workstations using it need to be upgraded to avoid being isolated from the network.

The Computer Officers handle maintenance such as account management, installing security patches and upgrading the machines to newer versions of Linux.

We encourage all Linux users in the department to use this service as the Computer Officers are able to give a much higher level of support to managed machines.

If you want to put a workstation onto the service or upgrade to the latest version of the image, please contact the helpdesk on support@ch.cam.ac.uk.

We have a list of frequently asked questions.
