The Scott Polar Research Institute is a well-known and long-established centre for research into both polar regions. It is part of the University of Cambridge and is a sub-department of the Department of Geography

Due to the Institute's physical location next to Chemistry, its computing is supported by the Chemistry Computer Officers.

SPRI has their own dedicated part-time computer officer, Bill Rothwell.

SPRI Computer Officer Nominal Working Hours:
Mon and Thurs: 9.30 to 15.30 (usually working from home)
Tues and Wed: 9.30 to 16.30 (usually present in SPRI)

Outside of these house, you can get emergency help from the Chemistry Computer Officers: support@ch.cam.ac.uk

For general issues, most of what you need can be found on the Chemistry computer pages: www.ch.cam.ac.uk/computing.

The Getting Started page is probably the most useful as it includes all the information you need just to get working:

For common problems and troubleshooting, there is a SPRI wiki page (for internal use only) - which is a dynamic site that will grow to meet the needs of the department.  As well as information on common issues, it also contains details on more SPRI-related IT matters, such as:

  • ordering non-standard software
  • administrator permissions
  • SPRI printers
  • Beluga Compute Server
