As part of the University's move to enable hybrid working patterns, a strategic-level decision has been made: to move away from the Cisco CallManager VoIP system in favour of SIP Phones. These SIP phones are compatible with the ordinary telephone network, just like the CallManager system, but also interact with Microsoft Teams so if you use a Teams client on your mobile you'll be able to make and receive phone calls from that device as well, using your allocated University extension number.

The UIS has further details about the move to Teams Telephony.

What models of phone are available?

We're no longer restricted to use Cisco phones: on the SIP / Teams system, we can use any SIP phone which is compatible with Microsoft Teams. This give us more flexibility in choosing the right device for the right place.

What if I need to receive incoming calls from the public phone network?

SIP / Teams phones are configured to do that, using a University land-line number (01223 74xxxx, 01223 76xxxx or 01223 33xxxx). There's no need for the person ringing to know you have any modern technology involved.
