We are sorry to announce that Chemistry Open Day on Saturday 14 March has been cancelled. Dr Wothers' three public demonstration lectures during the day have also been cancelled.

A letter from Head of Department Dr James Keeler:

I am sorry to have to let you know that we have found it necessary to cancel the Chemistry Open Day scheduled for this coming Saturday, 14th March.  The organisers of the Science Festival have very sensibly advised us that 'hands on' activities should be cancelled - for reasons which I am sure I do not need to rehearse.  As our activities are designed to be 'hands on', we felt it would be in the best interests of the public to cancel this event.

Dr Peter Wothers' brilliant lectures are of themselves not hands on, but over the period these would involve successive large groups of children/parents using the lecture theatre intensively, and it seems to me that this is not compatible with a precautionary approach. We have therefore made the decision that the lectures cannot go ahead.

We know that this event is very popular with the public, and that quite a lot of effort by members of the Department has already gone into thepreparation for it.  People will be disappointed on all sides that it has been cancelled, but I fear that as this stage it would be remiss not to do so.

Yours,

James
