The BP Institute is a thriving interdisciplinary research Institute in the University of Cambridge, whose mission is to conduct fundamental research into multiphase flow using a combination of theory, experiment and numerical modelling. The Institute was established through a generous endowment from BP, including the BP Institute building and well-equipped Institute flow laboratories.

The Institute provides a stimulating and open environment for interdisciplinary basic research, which is reinforced through excellent links with the parent University Departments of Earth Sciences (host), Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Engineering. Already, there is a lively and enthusiastic team of over 35 researchers in the Institute, headed by Professor Andrew Woods, the BP Professor of Petroleum Science. The team also includes four University Lecturers/Senior Lecturers: Dr Stuart Clarke, Dr Colm Caulfield, Dr Alex Routh and Dr Jie Li, and a wealth of post-doctoral researchers and graduate students from leading Institutions around the world. In addition, many other academic staff in the University are involved with the activities of the Institute.

Since the 10th anniversary of the Institute last year, BP has endowed a further lectureship to continue to build the activity. Applications are invited in one or more of the very wide range of disciplines in multiphase flow, including the following broad areas:
• Fundamental fluid mechanics: mathematical, numerical and experimental modelling
• Thermodynamics and chemical reactions involving flow
• Flows in process equipment and porous media
• Multiphase flows involving entrainment and separation of phases
• Colloids and interfacial phenomena

The salary will be in the range £36,715 to £46,510.

To apply please submit electronic files of (a) curriculum vitae, (b) list of publications, (c) 1000 word statement of research interests and intended research direction, and of teaching experience, (d) name, address, telephone number and email of three referees, to admin@bpi.cam.ac.uk. The closing date for applications is 15 April 2011, and we intend to interview short-listed candidates in the period May 24-27.

Candidates are also requested to ask their referees to write directly to the Administrator of the BP Institute (admin@bpi.cam.ac.uk) by 15 April 2011.

For further information please contact Professor Andrew Woods (andy@bpi.cam.ac.uk) or admin@bpi.cam.ac.uk or see the BP Institute web site (www.bpi.cam.ac.uk)
