Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry

The Department took part in the university-wide Switch Off Week (18-24th February 2013), in an attempt to reduce its energy usage and raise awareness of the issue.

Last week (18-24th February 2013) was the university's Switch Off Week. The Department of Chemistry took part in a Wednesday lunch time and weekend switch off, and perhaps more noticably "Thermal Thursday", where department members were encouraged to wear a woolly jumper and turn down the heating a notch to save energy. The group photo from this event will form part of the Department's evidence towards its Green Impact assessment, which will be submitted for assessment in April 2013. For information about the university's Green Impact scheme, see http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/carbon/getting_involved/greenimpact.html or contact Xin Yang ( Xin.Yang@atm.ch.cam.ac.uk) to find out how to join the Department's Green Impact team.

The Department of Chemistry's electricity usage is shown live on the Energy Dashboard (http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/carbon/wft/), where you can see the cycle of the working week for our department, and for other departments.

The Environment and Energy Team are calculating statistics on the university's energy usage, and will calculate how much money was saved during Switch Off Week. The money saved will be spent on an energy saving initiatve, which will be voted on by staff and students. To see the electricity usage by building across the university during February, download the spreadsheet at http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/carbon/getting_involved/sow.html.
