Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry

On Friday, December 16th 2011, the Cambridge Centre for Computational Materials Science was officially inaugurated.

The Centre is named after Sir John Lennard-Jones, the first Professor of Theoretical Chemistry in Cambridge and the first Director of the Mathematical Laboratory where the basis was laid for all subsequent "machine computing" in Cambridge.

Professor Haroon Ahmed, former Master of Corpus Christi.

During a brief, well-attended meeting in the Unilever Lecture Theatre Prof Haroon Ahmed, former Master of Corpus Christi, gave a brief biographical sketch of Lennard-Jones and described the early history of computing in Cambridge. After that, Prof Volker Heine FRS was made the first Honorary Member of the Centre, for his seminal contributions to the field of electronic structure calculations. Professor Heine gave a brief, autobiographical account of the development of computational materials science at the Cavendish Laboratory.

The Lennard-Jones Centre aims to develop initiatives that will foster teaching and research on all aspects of Computational Materials Science.
