Professor Gonçalo Bernardes has been honoured for his ground-breaking contributions to chemical and cancer biology.

The European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology has recognised Bernardes for his innovative research in chemistry and molecular medicine, citing in particular his work on directly targeting and degrading viral RNA, which opens new possibilities for drug discovery and medical treatments.

The first EFMC-WuXi AppTec Award for Excellence in Chemical Biology cites Bernardes' remarkable research in developing a new strategy for 'hijacking' and degrading RNA, dubbed meCLICK-Seq. The citation states: "His innovative research pursues key questions in chemistry and molecular medicine by using strategies that bridge disciplines and inspire the programmes of other researchers."

The award will be presented at the EFMC International Symposium on Chemical Biology in Switzerland in November, 2023.
