Joe Farman, the man who discovered the ozone hole, died on Saturday 11th May 2013.

Since he retired from the British Antarctic Survey, more than 20 years ago, he has had an office in the European Ozone Research Coordinating Unit within the Chemistry Department.  His ozone hole work, one of Nature’s 20th century highlights, has impacted generations of atmospheric scientists.  Joe understood how the stratosphere works.  For a man who avoided the limelight, his policy work was brave and enormously influential.

There was an open service in Corpus Christi Chapel on Thurs 23rd May at 14:00, where Joe was an undergraduate and honorary fellow.
