Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 1 year in the first instance.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the research group of Professor Dame Clare P. Grey in the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, working on a project focused on understanding solid-state ion dynamics and phase transformations in lithium- and sodium-ion battery electrode materials. This project will make use of operando optical microscopy experiments to observe these phenomena in real-time during battery operation.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work as part of a multidisciplinary team using a wide range of advanced characterisation techniques. They will be responsible for designing and conducting electrochemical experiments, preparing battery cells, and analysing ion dynamics and phase changes with operando optical microscopy and other techniques.

The role may involve a direct collaboration with the Faraday Institution (FI) Degradation (https://degradationproject.com/) and NEXGENNa (http://nexgenna.org/) projects and participation in regular relevant FI meetings.

Applicants should hold (or be about to obtain) a PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related field. A strong background in electrochemistry is essential, particularly in the context of battery research. Experience in optical microscopy or similar techniques is essential. Knowledge of in situ/operando experiments and associated cell design is desirable. Familiarity with one or more of the following techniques is highly desirable: X-ray and neutron diffraction, computational chemistry (e.g., DFT modelling), or solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Excellent communication skills, a collaborative approach, and the ability to work independently are also key requirements for this position. A strong proven track-record of publication in relevant fields is essential.
