Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry

This beautiful-looking cake was made to celebrate the wedding of a theoretical chemist whose fascination with her subject started here.

"When Susannah was growing up and we came to the annual Science Festival in Cambridge, we only ever got as far as the Chemistry department and would spend all day here!" says her mum, Jacqui Worster, who is Personal Assistant to Professor Steve Ley - and also, clearly, a gifted baker.

Susannah has just completed her DPhil in Theoretical Chemistry in Oxford and has been awarded a 3-year Research Fellowship by the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 to work on new design principles for efficient energy transfer in biomimetic light-harvesting devices at Bristol University.

For Susannah's wedding on 7th July at Worcester College Oxford where they met, Jacqui made the cake. "It was a family affair," she says. "The figures on top were made by my second daughter, Lizzie. And her fiance James and I made the flowers from sugar paste, having learnt how to make them by watching YouTube videos!"
