Over 30 support and research staff attended a Professional and Career Development support session in March to learn more about University opportunities for personal and professional development.

The session was held in response to results from a survey carried out by the Assistant Staff Athena SWAN Working Party. This highlighted a strong staff interest in pursuing ways to improve their career skills and progression. It also supported the department’s new Wellbeing initiative. (See the story 'Take four breaths...').

The session was led by Jessie Monck, Development Consultant in the University's PPD division, who works to support the development of employees' skills and knowledge, particularly in the areas of management and leadership development. Jessie explained the support available, the new-look University Personal and Professional Development (PPD) website, and how to access the different courses and programmes on offer.

She also encouraged staff to join the PPD mailing lists for up-to-date details of events, courses, secondments and skills-based opportunities. The session was followed by a buffet lunch in which staff were able to continue discussions with their colleagues and Jessie over sandwiches and cake.

Kathleen Pickett, a member of the Assistant Staff Athena SWAN Working Party, said she received positive feedback from the event. "It provided signposting for current staff, so colleagues have up-to-date information on how to find courses that might help them now and in the future," she said.

Due to the keen interest shown in the event, it is hoped that further staff sessions will be held in the future.
