Learning new research skills in the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry

Two new widening participation schemes will provide research experience to students from underrepresented groups and support their postgraduate applications.

A free ten-week summer internship programme will help underrepresented students decide whether they want to apply for postgraduate science research in Cambridge, while a new Close the Gap project will support students through the application process.

STEM Widening Participation Internship scheme

The Schools of the Physical Sciences and Technology are inviting current undergraduate students from any UK university to apply for one of 10 eight-week paid internships which will take place in the summer of 2024 from Monday 8 July to Friday 30 August.

The internships are open to all students who meet the essential and widening participation criteria.

There will be training opportunities aimed at giving interns the confidence to consider applying for postgraduate courses, along with social activities to build a strong cohort and to see what Cambridge has to offer outside of academia! The scheme provides an eight-week research project, and accommodation is kindly provided by Churchill College.

Applications open through 11 March 2024

This department is offering five of the research projects. They are:

  • The electrolyte design on Zn-ion capacitors for electrochemical carbon capture, with Dr Alexander Forse
  • C-O Activation for C-N Bond Formation, with Dr Ruth Webster
  • How do electrolyte properties determine battery energy, power and cyclability? with Dr Svetlana Menkin
  • Pyrolyzed 3D Carbon Electrode for Biophotovoltaic Devices, with Dr Jenny Zhang
  • Summer Internship in the Organic Chemistry Laboratory, with Dr Pawel Dydio

You can take a look at these and the other projects available, check you meet the eligibility criteria and see how to apply here. Applications close 9am on Monday 11 March 2024.

If you are considering a research career or wish to undertake a postgraduate degree but are not sure it is right for you, this programme could help you decide.

PhD Application support scheme

The university's Close the Gap project has also launched a new programme called AIM PhD, which provides mentoring to people who are applying to do a PhD in Chemistry. The programme is online and free of charge, and specifically aims to help applicants from underrepresented groups.

Other Internship Programmes

Some science and technology departments/programmes also offer their own internship schemes for internal and external candidates. Further details can be found via the links below:
