Research Fellow
Toby is a Herchel Smith Fellow in the Department of Chemistry establishing new gene encoded supramolecular structures for the development of biocompatible molecular machines that operate in cellulo.
He obtained his MChem from Durham University in 2019, conducting his final year research project with Prof. Paul McGonigal. In 2023, he completed his DPhil in Inorganic Chemistry at Oxford University under the supervision of Prof. Matthew Langton developing molecular machines for the control of transmembrane ion transport. Toby then moved to Princeton University to take up a position as a Lindemann Trust Fellow in the group of Prof. Jamie Link before securing an Omenn-Darling Fellowship to engineer new-to-nature mechanically interlocked peptides. Recently, he has secured a Herchel Smith Fellowship at the University of Cambridge, to develop gene encoded supramolecular structures. His research interests lie at the interface between stimuli-responsive supramolecular chemistry and biological discovery of mechanically interlocked natural products.
