Professor of Chemistry
Deborah Longbottom oversees postgraduate training and admissions in the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, in addition to her main University role as the Director of Education in the School of the Physical Sciences. Prior to this, for several years she was a Teaching Fellow for undergraduates in the Department of Chemistry, College Teaching Officer and Tutor, and still retains some key responsibilities in this area, including her first year organic chemistry course.
Research background
Professor Longbottom's research background comprises organic synthesis and methodology. She spent many years as a Senior Research Associate in the group of Professor Steven V. Ley, which followed postdoctoral studies with Professor K. C. Nicolaou and experience in the pharmaceutical industry. She also independently collaborated with the O'Reilly group at Warwick University, which led to interesting investigations on the synthesis and utility of amino-acid functionalised polymers formed by RAFT polymerisation but is now working full time on the education agenda both in the Department and the School of the Physical Sciences: therefore, those seeking a position for research as a postgraduate student or post-doctoral researcher should look to others in the Chemistry Department here or elsewhere to submit their applications.
