The Department of Chemistry has delivered safety glasses and gloves to Addenbrooke's Hospital to support local NHS staff in the battle against COVID-19.

In addition, and in response to an urgent call, we also made a substantial donation of lab coats and some disposable gloves and goggles to Royal Papworth Hospital on Good Friday.

Deputy Head of Department Dr Nick Bampos and Building Services Manager Matt Bushen delivered the Personal Protective Equipment to Addenbrooke's in response to appeals for this crucial protective gear.

In further steps, the Department donated  food from our Cybercafé to Swavesey Village College, which is staying open for vulnerable students and children of key workers.

In line with government regulations, the Department itself is now closed for all but essential activity.

Dr Keeler said:  “We have taken urgent steps to reduce the number of people with access to the Department, although crucial research equipment will continue to run and will be monitored regularly.  The fewer people who are using the building, the lower the risk of spreading any contagion.

“We must do all we can to support the Government’s efforts to slow down the spread of the virus.  To do otherwise simply for our own purposes would be irresponsible,” he said.
