80 pupils from 20 schools in the local area enjoyed a competitive day in the teaching lab here in the department.
Teams of four 11-13 year olds completed two Salters' Festival of Chemistry challenges. The first, Salters’ Challenge, “Murder comes to Salterstown”, required analytical chemistry skills to find the murderer. While the second, Univeristy Challenge, set by the Department of Chemistry, asked the teams to separate food dyes using a chromatography column.
The team from Catmose College, Oakham, Rutland won the Salters' Challenge and Trumpington Community College, Cambridge won the University Challenge. After the prize giving ceremony the entire cohort were treated to Peter Wothers' Open Day lecture, "Just Add Water".
