The department has been rated number three in the world, after the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of California, Berkeley.

The QS World University Rankings highlight the world’s top universities in 42 subjects, based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact. The rankings aim to help prospective students identify the world’s leading schools in their chosen field.

The rankings are based on academic and employer reputation (based on a global survey of academics), research citations per paper and h-index in the relevant subject (sourced from Elsevier’s Scopus database).  The indicators receive different weighting in each discipline.
