Chemistry Open Day 2015 courtesy Department of Chemistry

The always popular Chemistry Open Day, held as part of the Cambridge Science Festival, is scheduled for Saturday 12 March 2016.

The Department will open its doors from 10 am to 4:30 pm to science lovers of all ages to participate in hands-on activities and learn about chemistry.  Some of this year's activities will be:

  • “Power the world” – You will learn how batteries work and power your everyday life. You can have a look inside a laptop battery and even better: build your own power plant out of fruits!
  • “Magnetic levitation” – Get excited by materials that start floating when you cool them down. Would you like to join the ride?
  • “She loves me, she loves me not" – Come play with materials that absorb 800 times their weight in water, and others where water bounces right off! Come see how Cambridge scientists are designing materials of the future.

A map and full list of activities is available from the Open Day website or at the welcome desk outside the BMS lecture theatre (at the rear of the Department).  The event is open to all and is a free, drop-in event, geared to age 8+.
