This post fulfils an important role in the Department's teaching technician's team with responsibility managing for the smooth running of the Part IB teaching laboratory which provides practical chemistry classes for approximately 160 2nd year undergraduate students. The daily attendance is approximately 34 students and with the help of a technician, the role holder will provide technical and administrative support in the laboratories
Duties will include: providing technical assistance to the graduate demonstrators and Part IB undergraduate students regarding the safe and effective use of equipment and chemicals, providing adequate supplies of and advise the appropriate use of laboratory equipment and chemicals to students plus be responsible for chemical stocks held in the laboratory, maintain laboratory equipment and if necessary repair any equipment as required. The role holder manages a technician and also plays an active part in the overall exams assisting the Senior Examiner with the Tripos examinations and assists with outreach courses. They will also support experimental outreach work.
The successful candidate will have a degree or HNC in Chemistry or equivalent practical experience plus a good knowledge and experience of practical chemistry and laboratory procedures. They will be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal, organisational, communication and IT skills; the ability to work carefully and methodically plus deal with a wide range of people at all levels; the ability to prioritise, work under pressure and use own initiative. Previous experience of working with young people / students, good IT skills plus management experience would be an advantage.
