Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 October 2027 in the first instance.
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the group of Prof. Dame Clare P. Grey in the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, working on a project focused on the development and characterisation of novel polymers for improving the architecture of solid-state batteries.
The successful candidate will design and synthesise novel polymer materials and characterise their structural and electrochemical properties using a range of advanced techniques. They will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to understand how polymer design influences ion transport and interfacial behaviour in solid-state battery systems.
The successful candidate will synthesise and characterise polymer additives, incorporate them into solid-state batteries and use EIS-DRT to characterise interfacial behaviour in said batteries. Therefore expertise in all of the above fields is essential. Familiarity with battery assembly, and electrochemical analysis techniques (e.g., potentiometry, CV, GITT) is highly desirable. Experience with additional characterisation techniques ¿ e.g. solid-state NMR, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, or electron microscopy ¿ is desirable. Experience with modelling or simulation methods (e.g., DFT or molecular dynamics) to rationalise experimental results would also be an advantage. The project will involve collaboration with other researchers both internationally and within UK-wide consortia, and so a demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team is essential.
Applicants should hold (or be about to obtain) a PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Polymer Science, or a closely related discipline. A strong proven track record of publication in relevant fields is essential. Excellent communication skills, a collaborative approach, and the ability to work independently are also key requirements for this position.
