400 MHz NEO Wide Bore Solid State Spectrometer - 'Lossie' - Room B17
We have two solid state spectrometers in the basement area which are for departmental use. They are mostly used by members of Melinda Duer and Alex Forse's groups, but any researcher who needs solid state spectroscopy is able to request time on these spectrometers in collaboration with one of the group members. Lossie is a 400 MHz NEO Wide Bore Three Channel spectrometer and was upgraded in June 2021 to this configuaration following a successful grant application by Alex Forse. The change in name from Glenlossie to Lossie reflects this significant upgrade whilst still retaining our "whisky theme"!. There are a number of probes which can be used with this instrument:
The following four CP-MAS probe types are available:
2mm double resonance probe (MAS up to 30 kHz)
4mm double resonance probe (MAS up to 15 kHz) Two probes of this type
4mm triple resonance probe (MAS up to 15 kHz)
7mm double resonance probe (MAS up to 7 kHz)
The double resonance probes have a fixed 1H channel, with the second (X) channel tunable from 31P down to 15N.
The triple resonance probe has a fixed 1H channel, with several tuning combinations available for the X and Y channels. These are:
X Channel | Y Channel |
31P |
29Si-65Cu |
This NMR suite is designed for operator comfort and convenience, and as such features two bespoke glass partitions to divide the room into three. The magnets and electronics racks are housed in their own individually air conditioned rooms to cut down on noise, and an oxygen level warning system with automatic extract fan operation adds to the safety of the facility. The central room features ergonomic desk space for spectrometer operation and processing on two PC's running TopSpin on Red Hat Linux. A shared printer and drawer space completes this area. On the front wall below the windows are storage cupboards for probes and boxes, with a large worktop above for sample preparation and rotor packing.
