Children from years 7 and 8 experience hands-on practical chemistry.
Teams of four, from 20 schools in and around the East of England, once again took part in the Salters' Festival of Chemistry in the department teaching lab.
The students competed in two fun challenges, one set by Salters’ the other set by the department. The first, Salters’ Challenge, “Who is the Prime Suspect”, required analytical chemistry skills to discovery who murdered a fictional member of the company. The second, Chemistry Challenge, asked the teams to separate food dyes using a chromatography column.

After the prize giving ceremony the combatants enjoyed a demonstration lecture given by Pete Wothers, ‘Burning Issues’.
Next year, 2018 the Salters’ Institute will celebrate 100 years of supporting Science Education and a number of new projects will be launched, including Centenary Awards for post-graduates.
NB. The Salters’ Institute plays a major role in the support of chemistry teaching, the encouragement of young people to pursue careers in the UK chemical industries, and the promotion of chemical education including the whole area of curriculum development.
