Alex Kersting on "the only hill I could find in Cambridge"

Not to be daunted, several staff members took part in the University Sports Service Virtual Climbing Challenge to support Mental Health Awareness Week in May. All the equipment they needed was some stairs or a hill (arguably hard to find in Cambridge).

Team members were offered a range of challenges, from climbing the equivalent of a University building, a mountain or a landmark.  The catch -- climbers could only count steps going up, not going down!

Emma Graham kept a record of the steps for the week. And the results? Altogether Team Chemistry logged a total of 9,467 metres, or 61,938 uphill steps, the equivalent of Mount Everest followed by CN Tower (Toronto), the University Library Tower, and finishing with Great St Mary's Church! All proceeds from the event went towards the University's Covid-19 PPE Appeal Fund.

Team members and their accomplishments included:

  • Jacqui Worster:  The Shard
  • Rachael Jefferies: The Sydney Opera House and Great St Mary's Church
  • Annette Steward:  Ben Nevis and The Gherkin
  • David Woollard: The Sydney Opera House and the University Library Tower
  • Rafel Cabot Mesquida: CN Tower, Toronto
  • Ray Freshwater: Burj Khalifa
  • Alex Kersting: Most of the Petronas Towers, Malaysia
  • Emma Graham: Mont Blanc and most of The Shard
  • Jo Lockhart: The Shard
  • Kathleen Pickett: University Library Tower
  • Harriet Kerridge: King's College Chapel
Jo Lockhart (left): Here is me as I have just reached the top of The Shard during my afternoon security duty at the Department on the Friday afternoon!
Emma Graham (second from left): I have taken several pictures of the hills on my route and I can't get any of them to actually look like a hill!
