Freddie Chefel and Samantha Douglas are still getting used to their summer location
Anyone who has tried to enter the department from the car park end from the 10th of June will get a bit of a surprise! Reception has gone 'walkabout' to the East end (BMS) of the building, and will be there for most of the summer.
This is because there will be a major refurbishment of the entire foyer area - including new wiring, lighting, painting and signage. We are looking forward to the 'big reveal' which is planned just before term starts.
Marita Walsh writes that there will be a number of other improvements to the building over the summer as well. This means there will be some disruption to our lives, but to some of us that might seem like a cakewalk after coping with the one-way system. Well, maybe not, but we are all looking forward to a beautiful new reception area, modernised theatres and nicer toilets by the end of the summer (fingers crossed!). Here are some of the other works that will be going on:
- The lecture theatre lights are being replaced and new audio-visual systems will be installed in a staged approach over summer and Christmas breaks.
- Five toilets will be refurbished.
- Some windows on the east elevation will be replaced, which will require scaffolding from late August/early September, but should be completed before the start of term.
- Marita is also hoping to have the windows and cages over the ramp and in the inner courtyard given a good cleaning, but there is no start date for this work yet.
Marita writes: "I'm sorry for any disruption and the contractors will try to keep any disruption to a minimum. However, if there are any specific problems with the work or contractors, please contact either me, Matt Bushen or the Safety team."
