Some of you may remember from the April edition of Chem@Home that PhD student Mélanie Bay was marking each week of lockdown in France with a cake or pastry topped with the appropriate number of candles.  Mélanie reports that during lockdown she made a total of eight cakes. The delicious-sounding assortment includes: brownies (Mélanie says these were inedible, but they look delicious!), apple crumble, flan with dried prunes, strawberry cheesecake, and finally, a traditional Alsace cheesecake.

"The lockdown lasted eight weeks in France, so there are eight cakes in total,” says Mélanie.  Since then France has gradually been transitioning to normal life, so there will be no more lockdown cakes for us to ‘virtually’ enjoy.  Melanie is a member of Silvia Vignolini’s Bio-inspired Photonics Group.

Strawberry cheesecake (left) and Alsace cheesecake mark weeks 7 and 8 of lockdown in France. You can see weeks 1 through 6 here.
