Illustration of robots from 2000 AD comic, Richard Shaw.

Reprographics officer Richard Shaw has an unusual hobby: redrawing classic 70s movie posters, including Star Trek, The Man Who Fell to Earth, and The Hulk.

Recently, one of his illustrations, a reimagining of the robots from the science fiction comic book 2000 AD, won second place in a competition run by a Facebook fan group. Richard is a long-time fan of the comic series and has been reading it since he was eight years old.

“Back then, I bought it whenever I could with my pocket money,” comments Richard. “Eventually my dad started ordering it with his Saturday paper because he knew I didn’t want to miss an issue.”

It is a testament to the longevity of 2000 AD that it is not only still running today but is also supported by an active, creative community of fans. One of its most well-known characters is Judge Dredd, who was played by Sylvester Stallone in the 1995 American superhero film of the same name.

Richard has been drawing ever since he was young, partly inspired by his love of comics, although by necessity his hobby slowed down once he trained as a graphic designer due to lack of time.

“I used to redraw the panels when I was younger. When I became a graphic designer I stopped drawing quite as much. When lockdown began, I started drawing again because I had a bit more spare time.“

Most of Richard’s illustrations are tributes to classic 70s films. You can see his art on his website and look forward to his next piece, which will be based on Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
