Department cricket team members around scoreboard showing they beat Molecular Biology by 3 runs

The team after their four-run victory over Archaeology, including members from the Thom, Phipps and Nitschke groups.

Dr Amit Dahiya, a postdoc in the Phipps group, celebrates his 50 not out against Molecular Biology.

Team Chemistry played a total of six matches in the popular University Inter-departmental league, against teams from the Departments of Molecular Biology, Archaeology, Zoology, the Genome Campus and the Perse Teachers. They enjoyed a close victory of four runs versus Archaeology, but lost the other matches including a 10-wicket loss to Cambridge University Press in the Cup.

Team captain Fergal Hanna says: “We put in some good close performances and got better as the season went on.” The top bowling performances were Venkat Kapil’s 2 for 18, and Kripa Panchagnula’s 2 for 26. Venkat is an Oppenheimer Research Fellow in the Michaelides ICE group, and Kripa is a PhD student in the Thom group. Best batters were Amit Dahiya with an excellent 50 not out, and Kripa Panchagnula, who scored 30 not out.

Dr Amit Ghosh, a Research Fellow in the Nitschke Group, and Ethan Sorrell from Engineering bat together on a pleasant summer evening - what could be better?

New players needed

“We are looking to recruit next year as most of our team are starting to hit the end of our time in Cambridge,” says Fergal, who is in the third year of his PhD in the Hunter group, where he is researching the polarisation effects on hydrogen bonding.

The team is open to all skill levels, and Fergal says most members don’t have a lot of experience, usually having played a bit of college or club cricket. Games are 20 overs and played mid-week starting around 6pm.

This year the team included members of the Hunter, Phipps, Nitschke, Grey, Lee, Giorio, Reisner, Scherman, Bernardes, Thom, Balasubramanian and Michaelides groups. The squad also often includes a few ‘ringers’ from other departments who don’t have teams, so they can field a full team.

Fergal himself says he “played a bit of college cricket (he was a Caius undergrad) and a bit at school” but does not consider himself an expert. As the ‘nominal’ captain, Fergal says: “I do a bit of whatever was needed. I fill in where we’ve been short, bowl if we need a bowler and bat occasionally. Basically, I’m a Jack of all trades, master of none.”

Sponsorship

The team is also offering sponsorship opportunities to help provide departmental hats and shirts for club members.
