The Royal Society of Chemistry is sponsoring the annual Joliot Curie Conference at Murray Edwards College on 16-17 September.

The Joliot Curie Conference is dedicated to supporting the aspirations of early career chemists, particularly those who are underrepresented in research careers in academia or industry.  Deputy Head of the Chemistry Department, Nick Bampos, and former Deputy Head, Jane Clarke, will both speak at the conference, which has an exciting programme of workshops, one-to-one consultations, and talks designed to help young chemists find out more about research careers, develop their communication skills, and get information and support on career progression in academia or industry.

The conference is specifically aimed at final year PhD students, post-doctoral researchers, and other early career chemists in academia or industry who aspire to establish an independent career in research.  The event is free but it is essential to register.

The annual event is named in honour of Irene and Frédéric Joliot-Curie, a married couple who were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1935 for their work on the synthesis of radioactive elements.  Both came from strong scientific backgrounds (Irene's parents were fellow Nobel laureates Pierre and Marie Curie), but combined their passion for science with a keen awareness of broader political and social issues, campaigning tirelessly for women's education.
