Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry

Marcus Halevi

The 2016 Linnett Lecturer, Harvard Professor Xiaoliang Sunney Xie, will visit the department from 16th - 19th February.

Professor Xie is the Mallinckrodt Professor of Chemistry at Harvard University.  He will give three lectures and meet with faculty members, postdocs and graduate students to discuss his research into understanding life processes at the molecular level.

Professor Xie’s group has made important advances in single molecule spectroscopy and imaging, and their application to biophysical chemistry, and molecular and cell biology.  The group uses the single-molecule approach to investigate single molecule enzymology and stochastic gene expression.

The group has also led in the development of Stimulated Raman Scattering microscopy (SRS).

Professor Xie’s lectures will cover these topics:

“The Linnett Lecture” Tuesday 16 February 4 – 5 pm:

  • Life at the single molecule level:  single cell genomics

Thursday 18 February 4 – 5 pm:

  • Single molecule enzymology:  transcription against supercoiling

Friday 19 February 4 – 5 pm:

  • Seeing the invisible:  vibrational imagine for biology and medicine

Professor Xie will also meet postdocs at an informal dinner while he is in Cambridge.

The Linnett Visiting Professor of Chemistry was established in 1993 in memory of John Wilfrid Linnett, who was noted for his wide research interests throughout his distinguished career in chemistry.  Linnett was a Professor of Physical Chemistry, Master of Sidney Sussex College, President of the Faraday Society, and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge.
