The Sustainability committee

Over 22 members of the department attended the first meeting of the Sustainability Committee in July 2023, in a move to encourage better sustainability practices here.

The meeting was chaired by Forse group PhD student Chloe Balhatchet, who has been the driving force behind setting up the committee and enlisting departmental support. Chloe is actively involved in sustainability programmes in the department, her college and the University, and was recently awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Social Impact Award in Sustainability for her activities.

Read these pages to discover simple ways to reduce your impact

  • Ensure your group is represented in the Sustainability committee. Contact sustainability@ch.cam.ac.uk for details.
  • Follow the University guidelines for sustainable business travel.
  • Ask about enrolling your lab in the LEAF scheme, a programme set up by UCL to improve the sustainability and efficiency of laboratories.
  • Consider how your group can reduce and replace single-use laboratory plastics (more on this to come).
  • Join the Cambridge tradition and get on your bike. Read about our pool bike scheme. And did you know the University has provided a number of bicycle repair stations throughout the city in case you get stuck?
  • Separate your food waste from dry waste, so that we can transform the concept of waste into resource recovery. See how Mountain Recovery handles our waste.
  • Read electronic journals, not printed ones.
  • Use jugs of tap water instead of bottled water in meeting rooms.
