Research Associate

Thomas is a Research Associate in computational methods for biological and electrochemical systems in the Zhang group. He earned both his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Chemistry from Ruhr-University Bochum in Germany. Afterwards, he conducted his PhD studies in modelling cyanobacterial photocurrent at the Technical University of Munich, Germany, under the supervision of Prof. Nicolas Plumeré.

His research to date has centred on deriving a set of governing equations that describe the links between photosynthesis, cellular metabolism, and resulting photocurrents in order to investigate various hypotheses of exoelectrogenesis in cyanobacteria—particularly in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. He now aims to broaden his methodological toolkit by developing data-driven machine-learning models that correlate cyanobacterial photocurrents with a range of observables.
