PhD Funding

The department funds a large number of PhD studentships through research council and industry funded routes. We also support over 25 or more exceptional graduate applications through the University Scholarship Competitions each year. The Gates Scholarships which is open to international applicants provides full-funding. We recruit around 80 PhD students each year. In 2016, the funding sources were as follows: 29% received philanthropic or scholarship awards through the University; a further 37% received industrial awards and 34% through various research councils.

Other scholarships for international applicants (both full and part funding) include:

In addition to the University fees, living expenses are also required in the form of maintenance. For 2018/19 this is a minimum of £13,740 per annum. Fully-funded PhD awards from research councils, industry and scholarships usually cover fees as well as maintenance. However, this can depend on your fee status and source of funding.

University Composition Fees: Home students £8,094 per annum;  EU students £8,094 per annum; Overseas £27,945.
