PhD Funding

The department funds a large number of PhD studentships through research council and industry funded routes. We also support over 25 or more exceptional graduate applications through the Graduate Funding Compettion each year. The Gates Scholarships which is open to international applicants provides full-funding. We recruit around 80 PhD students each year. In 2016, the funding sources were as follows: 29% received philanthropic or scholarship awards through the University; a further 37% received industrial awards and 34% through various research councils.

In addition to the University fees, living expenses are also required in the form of maintenance. For 2019/20 this is a minimum of £14,500 per annum. Fully-funded PhD awards from research councils, industry and scholarships usually cover fees as well as maintenance. However, this can depend on your fee status and source of funding. 

University Composition Fees 2020/21: Home students £8,589, EU students  £8,589  and Overseas students £30, 813 per annum.
