Department of Chemistry

Jeannine was born in a little village in the beautiful canton Lucerne, Switzerland. To study Chemistry, she moved to Zurich where she received her BSc in Chemistry in 2010 from the University of Zurich. Before starting her Master studies, Jeannine participated in a research project in the research group of Prof. Heinz Berke, where she improved Rhenium catalysts for hydrogenation reactions.

In 2010, Jeannine joined the research group of Prof. Gilles Gasser at the University of Zurich, shifting gears from inorganic to bioinorganic chemistry, aiming to prepare first-in-class organometallic anthelmintic drug candidates. She finished her master studies the same year and started her PhD thesis in the Gasser group in January 2012. During her PhD studies she started to feel highly committed to fight parasitic diseases and was trying to find cures for a range of parasitic worm infections that are an immersive threat to livestock and human. Apart from her key contributions to the synthesis and biological evaluation of organometallic-based derivatives of organic anthelmintics, Jeannine was also active in the field of cancer therapy, where she synthesised and evaluated different ruthenium-based photosensitisers (PSs) for cancer photodynamic therapy (PDT).

After her PhD studies, Jeannine secured a SNSF Early Postdoc.Mobility Fellowship that allowed her to join the research group of Prof. Chris Abell at the University of Cambridge, to further focus on medicinal chemistry. Since 2016, Jeannine is pursuing rational drug discovery using fragment-based approaches. Recently, she obtained further funding in the form of a MSCA Individual Fellowship to continue the initiated projects and focus on the development of alternative antimicrobial agents.
