Research Interests

My research broadly relates to the reactivity of volcanic ash from explosive eruptions in the Earth system. Specifically, this work utilises a range of experimental and analytical techniques to investigate the properties and processes that govern:

  • The capacity of ash surfaces to take up and react with trace gases such as sulphur dioxide and ozone in the eruption plume and the atmosphere
  • The activity of ash particles in promoting ice nucleation in the eruption plume and the atmosphere
  • The role of ash emissions as a source of soluble, and potentially bioavailable, iron for the surface ocean

Previous Positions

  • Postdoctoral Researcher (2017) Laboratory of Physics and Chemistry of the Atmosphere, Université du Littoral Côte d'Opale, France

Qualifications

  • PhD Geochemistry (2016) Earth and Life Institute, Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium
  • MSc Environmental Science and Management (2012) University of York, United Kingdom
