Department of Chemistry

We currently have a vacancy for a highly skilled electrical mechanical technician with the ability to repair and modify a wide range of complex research and teaching equipment. The role holder provides an electrical service to the whole Department including the development of electrical equipment, maintenance of existing equipment, provision of new equipment by purchase or design, manufacture of bespoke units plus fault diagnosis and repair of faulty or unsafe scientific instruments. As a member of the electrical workshop team, the role holder will assist with the testing service of portable appliances (PAT) throughout the Department.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in electrical engineering and a recognised period of practical training. They will have a good working knowledge and experience of electrical circuits, laboratory equipment and light mechanical operations, resulting in minimal on the job training plus experience of working in a workshop environment. Good interpersonal and communication skills are also essential to liaise with outside agencies as well as group leaders and research workers, as is the ability to communicate and explain principles and techniques to those not trained in the discipline. The successful candidate will also have good problem solving skills and the ability to work under pressure.
