Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry

 

Location

The Department of Chemistry is located on Lensfield Road, at the south of the city. Please visit the Department's reception when you arrive, and they will contact the person you are visiting.

Getting to the Department

By bike

If you are able, why not bring your bike?  There are plenty of cycle routes and cycle lanes in Cambridge and cycling also helps you beat the traffic.  The whole of the front cycle parking area is available for use by visitors and students.  

By train

  • There are regular trains from London King's Cross and London Liverpool Street; train timetables are available at the National Rail website.
  • The train station is less than a mile (0.7 miles!) from the Department; see the Google Maps walking route from the train station.
  • If you prefer to take a taxi, there is a taxi rank immediately outside the train station.

By bus

  • The main Cambridge bus station is at Drummer Street., a little over half a mile from the Department; see the Google Maps walking route from the bus station.
  • If you prefer to take a taxi, there is a taxi rank next to the bus station.
  • There are a number of Park and Ride sites with regular bus services into the city centre.

By car

  • From the South take the M11 and exit at junction 12.
  • From the West, take the A428 from Bedford and exit at the A1303 as you approach Cambridge.
  • From the North, take the A14 and follow the signs to Cambridge.
  • From the East, take the A14 and exit at the A1309 (signed to Cambridge Science Park). 
  • Please note that there is very limited parking availability at the Department. If you require a parking space, please contact your host in advance to arrange this.

Parking in the city is very limited, and many of the roads in the city centre are only open to buses and taxis. Please note that parking at the Chemistry site must be booked in advance with your host. For further details, see the road map.

By air

  • Cambridge airport offers services from/to a limited number of destinations.
  • The nearest major airport is Stansted, which has a regular train service to Cambridge, which takes about 30 minutes (please see above for details on getting from Cambridge train station to the Department).
  • From Heathrow Airport
    • Travel by the Piccadilly Line on the Tube to King's Cross (see the Transport for London website) and then take the train to Cambridge
    • There are regular bus services from the airport (see the National Express website).
    • The journey from Heathrow to Cambridge takes around 2 hrs by underground/train, and 3.5 hrs by bus, subject to traffic conditions.
  • From Gatwick Airport
    • Travel by train to Victoria, followed by the Tube to King's Cross, and then via train to Cambridge, and a new direct Thameslink train service. 
    • There are also regular bus services.
    • The journey from Gatwick to Cambridge takes around 2 hrs by underground/train, and around 4-5 hrs by bus, subject to traffic conditions.
