There are several qualified First Aiders located throughout the Department. When requiring the assistance of a First Aider the following action should be taken:
Between 0800hrs – 1700hrs Monday – Friday, telephone Reception on 43027, giving clear instructions regarding the exact location or room you wish the First Aider to go. First Aiders will be paged via the Voice Alert system.
Outside normal working hours (1700hrs – 0800hrs Monday to Friday & at weekends) telephone the University Security Control Centre, Tel: 101, who will inform the Custodian / Departmental Night Security Staff. If the injury or illness is serious, immediately dial 9-999 for an Ambulance.
Other than ambulance cases, transportation to hospital can be provided:
All accidents, incidents, work-related health conditions and near misses must be reported on the day of occurrence to Dr Margaret Glendenning (Room M17a) or, in her absence, to Stephen Sear (Room M17). The completed University Accident Report Form should be returned to Dr Margaret Glendenning by the person concerned, the attending First Aider or other witness. Blank forms can be obtained from Reception. Relevant details of the accident must be transferred to the Accident Book kept in Reception.
If the casualty was conducting experimental work when the accident occurred, copies of the relevant Risk Assessment forms should also be provided. If the incident involves a student being taken to hospital then a message should be left in Reception with brief details (including the casualty's name).
All First Aiders carry 'first responder kits'. First-aid boxes are distributed throughout the building, though most are small. Sterile eye wash is available in all research and teaching laboratories. Additional supplies can be obtained via Stephen Sear.
First-aid kits for dealing with cyanide and HF incidents are kept in Reception. They contain specialised breathing apparatus and oxygen, and are ONLY to be used by specially trained, qualified First Aiders. HF antidote gel is kept in all laboratories where HF is used.
The First Aid Room is located opposite Cambridge Blue, outside the BMS Lecture Theatre, at the Student entrance. All First Aiders have Mifare access to this room.
