Department of Chemistry

Postgraduate Research in the Department of Chemistry

Funding for U.K. Students*

Each year the Department is able to take on 30 to 40 new Ph.D. students from Britain. Most U.K. students are funded by Research Council grants or other funds obtained through the Department. All British applicants will automatically be considered for such awards. Early applicants have a better chance of getting one of these awards and you are advised to submit the Preliminary Application Form by 15th January.

Prospective students wishing to apply for the four-year studentships in Medicinal Chemistry or NanoScience should go to those programmes' websites for details.

The total financial guarantee required from U.K. students who intend to be self-funded or funded from outside sources is likely to be about £16,815 per year for students starting in October 2011. Of this sum about £6,065 is for University and College fees and the balance is for your maintenance/living costs. The maintenance/living cost for students with children or other dependants is considerably higher. See the Board of Graduate Studies website for the latest figures.
