Department of Chemistry

Postgraduate Research in the Department of Chemistry

Funding for UK (Home) and other EU Students*

Each year the Department is able to take aroud 40 new PhD students from Britain and other countries within the EU.  Most are funded by UK Research Council grants or other funds obtained through the Department. All eligible applicants will automatically be considered for such awards. Early applicants have a better chance of getting one of these awards and you are advised to submit the official graduate application form (GRADSAF) as soon as possible after 1 September 2013.

Students wishing to apply for the Gates Cambridge scholarship competition (EU students) must submit their GRADSAF by 3 December 2013 and the Cambridge Home and European Scholarship Scheme (CHESS)  (UK and EU students) must submit their GRADSAF by 10 January 2014.

Prospective students wishing to apply for the four-year studentships in the BBSRC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) in Biosciences or NanoScience should go to those programmes' websites for details and application deadlines.

The total financial guarantee required from Home/EU students, who intend to be self-funded or funded from outside sources, is approximately £18670 per year for students starting in October 2014. Of this sum £4000 is for the University Composition Fee, £2470 for the College fee and the balance is for your maintenance/living costs. The maintenance/living cost for students with children or other dependants is considerably higher.

Please refer to Fees and Costs and Funding your Studies on the Graduate Admissions website for further information.
