Student Training and Support

Much of the training and information in research techniques for Ph.D. students comes from other research workers both in the same research group and in other groups. The Chemistry Department at Cambridge has a very large number of research workers of all type so students get excellent training in their own area and opportunities to learn about many other areas.

In the department, there are approximately:

  • 200 young chemists studying for their Ph.D.
  • 140 Post-doctoral research associates and research fellows
  • 115 Support Staff
  • and a continuous flux of distinguished medium or long-term visitors from other institutions worldwide.

Students' understanding of chemistry is also extended through lectures and seminars. During their first year Ph.D. students are required to attend a course of lectures (one per week).

Each sector also has weekly Colloquia where distinguished chemists from the U.K. and abroad talk about their research (see links from the Department's home page). Most research groups also have weekly seminars where students give short talks on their own research or some topic from the chemical literature.

The Department has a brand new lecture room and meeting rooms in the Unilever Centre, equipped with all the latest audiovisual aids.

Did you know? The pharmaceutical company Bristol Myers Squibb donated 1 million pounds to renovate lecture theatre no. 1, which seats around 500, and generous donations from Pfizer and from the Wellcome Trust enabled the recent refurbishment of lecture theatres 2 and 3.
