The cost of doing a Ph.D. in a scientific subject for an European Union student is likely to be about £17,140 per year for students starting in October 2011. Of this sum about £6,065 is for University and College fees and the balance will be required for your maintenance/living expenses. See the Board of Graduate Studies website for updated figures when they are available.
If this Department allocates a Research Council studentship to an E.U. student then under current Government policy this would only pay the fees and not the maintenance. The Department of Chemistry itself has no other funds which it can use to assist with the costs (although individual supervisors may have such funds). Therefore, E.U. students are generally either self-funded or have a scholarship from some source.
Prospective students wishing to apply for the four-year studentships in Medicinal Chemistry or NanoScience should go to those programmes' websites for details.
The University has a limited number of bursaries available:
Details of these and other scholarships available from Cambridge University can be found in the Graduate Prospectus.
