John Pyle was featured on the Australian news programme "AM" to discuss a report which has revealed that the ozone layer is on track to recovery, thanks to concerted international action against ozone depleting substances.

The Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion 2014 has attracted widespread media coverage for its positive message on the success of the 1987 Montreal Protocol, which relies on international cooperation to reduce the production and consumption of  ozone depleting chemicals. John Pyle was a co-chair of this assessment and Neil Harris a lead author.

The summary document of the assessment is published every four years by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), under the terms of the Montreal Protocol. Its purpose is to analyse the latest scientific research related to the ozone layer and inform the terms of the protocol. Research in the Department’s atmospheric sciences group over many years has made a major contribution to this body of research.
