Society in Science - The Branco Weiss Fellowship, is now open for applications from postdoctoral researchers

The programme awards young researchers around the world with a generous personal research grant, giving them the freedom to work on whatever topic they choose anywhere in the world, for up to five years.

This research fellowship is designed to support postdoctoral researchers after their PhD and before their first faculty appointment.  Applicants must have defended their PhD before 15 January 2016. Those in current postdoctoral positions are also eligible. Ideally, fellows pursue unconventional projects in new areas of science, engineering and social sciences.

Up to ten Branco Weiss fellowships are awarded each year, to researchers who wish to pursue world-class research on the frontiers of society and science.  Applicants are required to design a novel and scientifically rigorous research project, which should depart from the mainstream of research in their discipline.  The fellowship will be awarded to those with a record of outstanding scientific achievements, who demonstrate a willingness to engage in a dialogue on relevant social, cultural, political or economic issues across the frontiers of their discipline.

Researchers are free to choose their host organisation among the top institutions worldwide, including the Department of Chemistry.

Funding

Society in Science fellows can expect CHF 100,000 (approx £65,000) per year for five years, which may be used to cover all legitimate costs of research (eg, salary, equipment, travel costs, consumables, personnel, etc).

Deadline

The deadline for applications is 15 January 2016.

The Society in Science fellowship program was initiated and financed by the Swiss entrepreneur Dr. Branco Weiss, who passed away in October 2010. The program belongs to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH).
