Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry

Cambridge MP Julian Huppert will visit the Department on 21 July to celebrate the recent £2 million upgrading of its core analytical facilities.

"I'm proud to launch these new facilities which show that Chemistry at Cambridge – and across the UK – is continuing to thrive" said Dr Huppert, who completed his PhD in Biological Chemistry in the Chemistry Department.

The higher sensitivity, shorter measurement times, better accuracy and superior characterisation of the new and upgraded instruments will give Cambridge scientists access to the most recent technological advances to support their research.

"This important investment is a fundamental part of the government's on-going effort to ensure that the UK maintains its place as a global leader in research in the chemical sciences" said Professor Daan Frenkel, Head of the Department of Chemistry. "Techniques such as X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, Mass Spectroscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy are crucial to solving some of the most challenging problems we face in basic and applied research".

The £2 million investment was funded by the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council, with matching funds from the University of Cambridge.
