Higher Apprentice Mechanical Workshop Technician
Fixed-term: 3 years training contract in the first instance.
We currently have a vacancy for a Higher Apprentice in our mechanical workshop. The role is workshop based and the use of machine tools is the primary skill along with computer aided design (CAD), for which training will be given. The workshop design, manufacture, and modify a wide range of complex research and teaching equipment. The many disciplines within Chemistry present a range of interesting and challenging design problems for our engineers. Some areas of interest are High Pressure Systems, Ultra High Vacuum, Low and High temperature work and Upper Atmosphere environments, making the work varied and interesting especially when combining more than one of the above.
The successful applicant will be required to undertake a day release BTEC HNC Diploma in Mechanical Engineering in the first instance but could go on to take a part time degree in Integrated Engineering (optional). Ideally you will be computer literate, able to communicate effectively, enthusiastic, have the ability to express clearly technical details and show evidence of practical problem-solving skills.
Skills required include the ability to concentrate for extended periods, good manual dexterity and the ability to learn quickly.
Applicants should hold or be expected to achieve 2 A levels at grade D or above to include Mathematics and preferably Physics or other Science subjects, or a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering or Electrical/ Electronic Engineering (MMM), and 4 GCSE's at C Grade or above (or equivalent) including Mathematics, English and a science-based subject as a minimum.
